Hello again everyone! It is Beril . Today I have a very interesting topic to write about also it is very important to athletes .Today I want to write about ‘nutrition in sports’ but before I start I have to warning you: I am not a doctor or nutritionist .I am just a 16 years old professional swimmer who is doing sport actively and racing regularly so I am going to write this article based on my experiences and some of my researches.
First of all I have to say that healthy and balanced diet is so important good performance. we should eat from all three basic food groups: carbohydrates , fats , and proteins .All of them is very necessary for better performance at sport. Carbs is quickest energy source ,proteins is to build muscles and necessary to recovery after exercise , fats is the biggest energy sources. If we even one is missing, the efficiency will decrease in sports .
These days, as everybody knows that there are lots of ‘healthy lifestyle trend’ on social media but many of them just information pollution because all of them are very wrong and unhealthy .Now, I would like to write about one of them: the gluten-free diet .The gluten free diet is so popular recent days .It is the diet that removes all carbohydrates from our diet to loss weight! But it is too wrong especially for performance athlete because the carbs give as quick energy which is super necessary before and after trainings .Well , if you ask me ‘How do I know that?’ , sadly I have tried it before and I saw the results in myself.
It was last year and I obsessed with my body. That year we were doing weight training a lot so my body was quite bigger than normal and I thought I gained weight (maybe I gained little)so I did some researches on internet and I saw some information about ‘How unhealthy carbs are.’ After that search I started to a gluten free diet. I did not eat any carbohydrate for nearly one month and I keep my training program (6 swimming training and 3 dryland training a week!) and guess what, I lost 5kg in just a month. Nevertheless my swimming performance was getting worse even I was not be able to finish my swimming distances because I did not have enough energy. Also I joined a swimming important swimming race(Turkish National Swimming Race) and I even could not swim my previous times. So after the race I decided to measure my body weight and muscle rate and I found out that I lost 5 kg from my muscles just because of my stupid gluten free diet!!!
So I can say that from my experiences all the food groups, including carbohydrates, are essential for our body’s health and good performance in sports.
